ELLESMERE PORT Afghan Racing Report June 2009
It is obvious that we are now writing about what
could be called the summer meetings of our little club. The weather on
Sunday (7 June) took a turn for the worse being wet and windy. Luckily the
weather did not dampen anyones spirits and there was a healthy happy
attendance (both humans and dogs). The Affies definitely found the day fun
again feeling that it would be a good idea to make as much noise as possible
and generally enjoy themselves. All the other breeds reacted with their
usual mixture of excitement and bewilderment in fairly equal measures.
As I continue to point out for those of you who have never attended an
afghan race meeting before it belies the theory that animals do not know
what is going on. As soon as my dogs see the bag with their jackets and
muzzles in they are rushing around yelling and generally acting like a gang
of very young puppies. The secret is to try not letting them see these
things until we get there but it does not seem to work. When we get there
every race finds those that can reach the perimeter fence standing up
yelling (barking) the participants around and those that cannot reach the
fence bark and strain at their leashes anyway. It can get wild. Those of you
who have never taken your dog racing you really do not know what they are
missing find the nearest meeting to yourselves and go. If you have the
opportunity at least go along and see what happens. They deserve the fun.
It was great to see lots of our regular afghans Joby and Tannis Wood
(still driving their owners mad, Shayka and Kaya Venables , Honey, Tarkan,
Taniq and Casper Smith , Dexter Hall who ambled around the track happy as
can be (time was irrelevant), Kabul , Ayesha and Amenti Owen. Returning
after their first runs last month were Tayah and Sharla Harding along with
Bella Bleasdale. Also in attendance this month were Isis, Lydia and Bling
Mort along with Poppy Stainsby. New attendees this month were Jamaal Waking,
Tails Collins and Annie and Jolie Carr.
As for the days times there was a lot of competitive runs apologies for
not mentioning all times there is only space to highlight the quickest
dogs times. Again it was really good to see a group of real races with
evenly matched dogs. The best time of the day was a 21.23 from Annie Carr.
Other sub 24 second runs came from Casper Smith, Lydia and Bling Mort, Kabul
Owen, Poppy Stainsby, Kaya Venables and Jolie Carr. Of the other Afghans it
was obvious that they thoroughly enjoyed their romp after the hare.
Of the other breeds in attendance it was good to welcome regulars Sultan and
Soraya Snape, and returning friends Border Terriers Phy and Tess Blaydon
along with Lurchers Beauty and Daisy and Misca Peace. Returning yet again
the bug having been well and truly caught were Ivy and Murray Sheldon the
Whippets (Who enjoy it more each time) Cavalier Poppy Price, Pippie Tyler
the Lurcher along with Alfie a cross Deerhound her brother, Pip and Coco
Owen Saluki, Jamaal Scowen Saluki and finally Sheeny Wakling a Dalmation
and Shanice wakling a Huskey.
If I have missed or misrepresented any of you, apologies, it is totally my
fault. The important thing is they all enjoyed their romp.
Hopefully we will see you all soon again.
ELLESMERE PORT Afghan Racing Report May 2009
It seems true that age and time are linked. These
meets seem to come around so quick and it is with some surprise that I
realise that I am already writing about our third get together of 2009
already. This meet took place at Ellesmere Port the good spring weather
continued helping to keep the attendances healthy.
The state of the weather seemed to get to all the dogs and their pets (us).
The Affies definitely found the day fun deciding that it would be a good
idea to make as much noise as possible and generally enjoy themselves. All
the other breeds reacted with their usual mixture of bemusement and
excitement in equal measures.
With the risk of sounding like a broken record and for those of you who have
never attended an afghan race meeting before it belies the theory that
animals do not know what goes on. Every race finds those that can reach the
perimeter fence standing up yelling (barking) the participants around and
those that cannot reach the fence bark and strain at their leashes anyway.
Again those of you who have never taken your dog racing you really do not
know what they are missing find the nearest meeting to yourselves and go.
I must apologise at this point we where inundated by so many newcomers I
am not able to fully remember all the names. Hopefully I will not miss any
of our four legged friends. If I make an error the fault is all mine.
It was great to see lots of our regular afghans Joby (who continues to
enjoy his short cuts we need to build a track on the grass just for him.)
and Tannis Wood, Shayka and Kaya Venables (Kaya completing all three runs in
the 23 second bracket saving the best till last with a 23.34), Honey (best
time 23.90) and Casper Smith (23.59), Dexter Hall who ambled around the
track happy as can be time was irrelevant), Kabul (who achieved the feet of
two identical times 23.67), Ayesha and Amenti Owen. Returning again after
their first runs last month where Tarkan (26.48) and Taniq (25.6) Smith
As well as the regulars we welcomed some new and returning Afghans for their
first runs either of the year or just first runs Tarkan, Taniq and Honey
Smith, old friends Hagar Roscoe and Abi Lloyd (21.18 and 21.16) and new
friend Bamboo Lloyd (who did a competitive 24.93). Taya (creditable 24.45)
and Sharla Harding (25.46) (who where still basking in the success of their
sister I send a personal well done to Graham and his team for the
excellent success he is having with his Ashahni baby).
A final welcome was given to Bella (Bloom) Bleasdale who quickly got the
idea of what racing is about and completed three runs with a best time of
24.12s
As for the days times there was a lot of competitive runs as mentioned
above apologies for not mentioning all times there is only space to
highlight the quickest and newest dogs times. Again it was really good to
see a group of real races with evenly matched dogs. The best time of the day
was a 21.16 as mentioned above set by Abi Lloyd, Most consistent times came
from Kaya Venables with 3 in the 23 second bracket. Of the other Afghans it
was obvious that they thoroughly enjoyed their romp after the hare.
Of the other breeds in attendance it was good to welcome regulars Sultan and
Soraya Snape, and returning friends Border Terriers Phy and Tess Blaydon
along with Lurchers Beauty and Daisy Peace (whos owners do take these races
very seriously!). Returning for a further month the bug having been caught
where Sage Lloyd the Doberman, Ivy and Murray Sheldon the Whippets (Who
firmly now understand that the aim is to chase the hare as fast as you can)
Millie and Maisie Sheldon Lakeland Terriers. Also there for the fun was
Jetta Carmical the Saluki.
New visitors from the other breeds were Cavaliers Millie Walling and Poppy
Price, Marcie Walling another whippet, along with Peaches and Alice
Newington, Greyhounds. If I have missed or misrepresented any of you,
apologies, it is totally my fault. The important thing is they all enjoyed
their romp.
Hopefully we will see you all soon again.
Can everyone please note that racing will be on the usual first Sunday of
next month. This means that the next meeting will be held on 7th June Please
arrive in good time to book in to allow racing to start at 1pm. See you
there.
ELLESMERE PORT Afghan Racing
Report April 2009
The first Afghan racing spring meet of 2009 was
upon us on Sunday 5th April at Ellesmere Port. The pleasant early spring
weather brought with it a bumper attendance with a large mixture of dogs and
owners.
The spring fever seemed to flow through all the dogs and their pets (us).
The affies definitely found the day fun reacting to the spring weather like
new born lambs frisky and enjoying themselves. All the other breeds
reacted with a mixture of excitement and bemusement in equal measures.
For those of you who have never attended an afghan
race meeting before it belies the theory that animals do not know what goes
on. Every race finds those that can reach the perimeter fence standing up
yelling (barking) the participants around and those that cannot reach the
fence bark anyway.
Those of you who have never taken your dog racing
you do not know what they are missing.
I must apologise at this point we where inundated
by so many newcomers I am not able to remember all the names. Hopefully I
will not miss any of our four legged friends. I do thank everyone for making
the effort to attend it is what makes the day, and effort, worthwhile
It was great to see lots of our regular afghans
Joby (who still enjoys his short cuts we need to build a track on the
grass just for him.) and Tannis Wood, Shayka and Kaya Venables, Casper
Smith, Dexter Hall, Kabul, Ayesha and Amenti and Isis Owen, Lydia Mort and
Poni Kirk. Returning again after their first runs last month where Saxo and

As well as the regulars we welcomed some new and
returning Afghans for their first runs either of the year or just first runs
Tarkan, Taniq and Honey Smith, Annie and Jolie Carr (Annie setting the
quickest time of the day for Afghans at 20.9s) and Poppy
As for the days times there was a lot of
competitive runs, it is really good to see a group of real races with evenly
matched dogs. The best time of the day was a 20.9 as mentioned above set by
Annie Carr, she followed this up with a 21.09!. Other sub 24 second runs
came from Casper Smith, Tannis Wood, Ayesha and Kabul Owen and Poni Kirk,
Lydia Mort, and Jolie Carr. Of the other Afghans it was obvious that they
thoroughly enjoyed their romp after the hare.
Of the other breeds in attendance it was good to
welcome regulars Sultan and Soraya Snape along with Scooby Williams, and
returning friends Border Terriers Orry and Breeze Balydon . Returning for a
second month hopefully they have caught the bug where Sage the Doberman,
Ivy Sheldon the Whippet (Who worked out this month that the aim is to chase

ELLESMERE PORT Afghan Racing Report March 2009
The 2009 Afghan racing season arrived upon us on Sunday 1st March at
Ellesmere Port. It brought with it the usual mixture of exited dogs and
chattering (female) owners.
Amazingly for the beginning of March the weather was
sunny if not a bit chilly.
This being the weekend ahead of Crufts limited the turnout but there was a
good covering of regulars plus healthy sprinklings of visitors we hope to
see some of you again during the season (shows and weather permitting).
I am sure that Amanda Venables found it much fun booking in all the new
names trying to ensure they where all right - and Julie Smith also had fun
watching the gate and welcoming the newcomers. The affies definitely found
the day fun reacting to the spring weather like new born lambs frisky and
enjoying themselves.
At this point I want to thank all our four legged friends for bringing along
their pets (us). Without you all this would be pointless.
It was great to see lots of our regulars for the start of the season Joby
(who still enjoys his short cuts) and Tannis Wood, Shayka and Kaya Venables,
Casper Smith, (who continues to drive me around the bend stopping half way
around - but at least he did decide to finish all the races) Dexter Hall,
Kabul, Ayesha and Amenti Owen, Lydia Mort and Poni Kirk.
As well as the regulars we welcomed some new Afghans for their first runs
Saxo and Leon Kirk (Who quickly worked out what the idea was). Tzukki
Guthrie and Ruby. (Who has the makings of a fast dog)
As for the days times there was a lot of shaking off the cobwebs. It was
good to see a group of real races with evenly matched dogs. The best time of
the day was a 22.73 set by Lydia Mort, who followed that up with a 22.96,
and Sub 24 second times came from Tannis Wood (all 3 runs) and Poni Kirk. Of
the other Afghans it was obvious there was more to come during 2009.
Of the other breeds in attendance it was good to welcome regulars Sultan and
Soraya Snape, Lurchers Mischa and Beauty Peace along with Scooby Williams,
and our friendly Border Terriers Phi and Maeve Sykes. New visitors from the
other breeds were Salukis Persia and Lady Guthrie (Who could not quite work
out what they were supposed to do) Luca Donalds (who despite her owners
misgivings enjoyed the romp around the track!), and Whippet Ivy Sheldon who
eventually understood the idea was to chase the hare. Hopefully we will see
you all soon again.
Can everyone please note that racing will be on the first Sunday of the
month. This means that the next meeting will be held on 3rd April. Please
arrive in good time to book in to allow racing to start at 1pm. See you
there.
